My genealogy research all began because of my mom's old brown box!Inside this mysterious "brown box" were letters in envelopes, some official looking documents, and a few pieces of jewelry.

“Declared Dead by Court Order” – there it was. I had looked at this document many times as a child. It had been kept in a “brown box” in my mother’s closet and poking thru it gave me something to do on rainy afternoons.
The “brown box” had arrived one Christmas full of chocolate covered cherries. They soon disappeared sending my blood sugar soaring. The candy was replaced with other treasures – pieces of paper with fancy handwriting which made them look very important. And yes, they were very important because the information opened a door to my family history.
Through several moves the “brown box” tagged along although no longer of interest to a little girl in school.
After my mother’s death in 1992, we found it in her closet. Now it was time to search for the story behind this important document.
